CHENGDU,April24(Xinhua)--Athird10-kilovoltgreenpowertransmissionlinehasrecentlybeenconnectedtotheclosingceremonyvenueofthe31stFISUSummerWorldUniversityGamesinChengdu,capitalofsouthwestChina'sSichuanProvince.
ThelineisthelastofmanypowerprojectsparticularlybuiltforthegameswhichwillbeheldfromlateJunetoearlyJuly.Alltheenergyusedbythegamesvenueswillcomefromgreensources,accordingtothelocalelectricitysupplier.
"Wehavesignedgreenpowerpurchasecontractstoachieve100percentcleanenergyforthegames,"saidLuoXiaoyi,aspokespersonoftheStateGridSichuanElectricPowerCompany.
Thecontracts,whichinvolve198millionkWhofgreenelectricityforatwo-monthperiodaroundthegames,canhelpreduce169,000tonnesofcarbondioxideemissions.
Thehostcitywillalsosendpureelectricvehiclesandhydrogenvehiclestoprovidetransportationservicesduringthegames.
ThegreenUniversiadeisjustpartofthehostprovince'sgreendriveasChinaseekstoreducerelianceonpollutingcoalandmeetitscarbonreductiontargets.
Sichuanhasabundantcleanenergyresourcesincludinghydropower,geothermalpower,andwindandsolarpower.Itisthecountry'slargesthydropowerproducer,withatotalinstalledhydropowergeneratingcapacitybreakingover90GWthisyear.Over350billionkWhofcleanelectricityaregeneratedyearlyintheprovince,creatingabigroomforelectricitysubstitution.
Theprovinceisencouragingtheindustrial,agriculturalandtransportationsectorstoswitchtoelectricityfromfossilfuels,amovethatcanhelpreducepollutionandcutproductioncosts.
Boostedbydiscountedelectricitycharges,SichuanHongyaQingYijiangSodiumSulphateCO,Ltd.inthecityofMeishanhasinvestednearly300millionyuan(around47millionU.S.dollars)since2018toupgradesteamenginespoweredwithcoaltoelectricones.Ithasthusachieved536millionkWhofelectricitysubstitution.
"Theelectricitysubstitutionhasdrivenusontothefasttrackofgreentransition,realizingawin-winoutcomeoflowerpollutionandproductioncostsbuthigherprofits,"saidZhongLi,vicegeneralmanagerofthechemicalcompany.
Intheteaindustry,35and104enterprisesinSichuan'sYa'anandLeshan,respectively,hadaccomplishedthepowerconversionfromcoaltoelectricitybytheendof2021.
"Thegoalistoproduceteawith100percentelectricity-poweredmachinesby2025,"saidShiShuangfromtheStateGridSichuanbranch'smarketingdepartment.
Moreconsumersarebuyingnew-energyvehicles(NEV)inthecountry'sNEVboominrecentyears,drivinguptheconsumptionofelectricitywiththeinstallationofanincreasingnumberofchargingpoints.
"Thisyear,Iinstallaroundadozenelectricvehiclechargingpointsadayatmost,"saidchargerinstallerYuLininChengdubeforehurryingtohernextstop.Yusaidtheinstallationbusinesshasdoubledthisyear.
ByApril1,thenumberofelectricvehiclechargingfacilitiesinSichuanhadrisento91,900,markinga46.8-percentincreasefromabouthalfayearago.
Withelectricitysubstitutioninmultiplesectors,theamountofenergyreplacedbyelectricitygrew16percentyearonyearto15.1billionkWhin2021andachieved4.8percentgrowthinthefirstquarterofthisyear,accordingtotheStateGridSichuanbranch.
ReplacingcoalandoilwithelectricitystimulatestheconsumptionofcleanenergyandcontributestoChina'scarbonpeakandcarbonneutralitygoals,accordingtoaguidelinejointlyreleasedby10centralgovernmentagenciesincludingtheNationalDevelopmentandReformCommissionandtheNationalEnergyAdministrationinMarch.
"Withrichrenewableenergy,westernChinahastheendowmenttocultivateagreenindustrialsystem,"saidZhangLei,CEOofgreentechcompanyEnvisionGroup.ThegreenindustryisvitaltopropellocaldevelopmentandnarrowChina'sregionaldisparities,accordingtoZhang.
